Maybe because – talking about classic Usa guitars used for roots music – they were an alternative choice to the two reignin’ brands Fender-Gibson. And they were less expensive than the above mentioned or other brands the like of Gretsch or Rickenbacker. Or because John Lee Hooker played them. Sure by the time I reached the age to play a guitar Epiphone had already slipped in the unlucky position of the “cheap brand of Gibson”, as a sort of mexican-produced Fender or, worst, a Squire.
